Helen Slater recognised as Local Woman of the Year

Member for Bega Dr Michael Holland has proudly recognised Helen Slater of Bega as his 2026 Local Woman of the Year, honouring her decades of quiet and tireless service to the community.

Helen has served as President of the Hillgrove House Auxiliary for more than 20 years, dedicating countless hours to catering for funerals and community events and raising vital funds to support residents. Those efforts have recently culminated in the Auxiliary purchasing a new bus for resident transport — a lasting legacy of Helen’s leadership and commitment.

“Helen’s contribution to our community is extraordinary,” Dr Holland said.

“She has baked fresh scones every day of the Far South Coast National Show for years, supported numerous organisations including the Bega Nursing Home Auxiliary, Bega Show, Pony Club, Showjumping and Athletics, and stepped up during times of crisis — including helping feed evacuees during the 2018 Tathra bushfires.”

An avid gardener, Helen also supplies much of the flowers and foliage used in ANZAC Day wreaths, supporting another important fundraiser.

Dr Holland presented Helen with her award at the NSW Women of the Year Awards ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Sydney, held as part of NSW Women’s Week 2026.

“Helen exemplifies the quiet, steady service that holds regional communities together,” Dr Holland said.
