NSW LABOR COMMITS $284,000 TO IMMEDIATE SUPPORT FOR SOUTH COAST HOUSING PROJECTS
NSW Labor will commit to funding critical infrastructure for two local housing projects under a Minns Labor Government.
For 12 long years the Liberal National Government have neglected and severely underfunded social and affordable housing projects, especially in the regions, with no new social housing homes completed in the Bega Electorate between 2018-2019 and 2021-2022.
This lack of action has forced local organisations to bear the brunt and costs of helping house vulnerable members of the community.
Once such organisation, The Family Place in Moruya, has been providing support for families and those impacted by social disadvantage, domestic violence, and homelessness in the Eurobodalla for over 30 years.
NSW Labor’s commitment of $84,000 will provide three two-bedroom demountable accommodation units to deliver immediate emergency temporary housing for six or more people currently experiencing homelessness locally.
Sadly, older women are recognised to be the fastest-growing group to experience homelessness in Australia. That’s why NSW Labor will also deliver up to $200,000 to the Bermagui Country Women’s Association for further development of affordable accommodation for low-income seniors under a Minns Labor Government.
Quotes attributable to Dr Michael Holland MP, Member for Bega:
“The Family Place has been supporting so many people experiencing homelessness in our community, I’m hoping this commitment will be able to help alleviate some pressure they’re under in finding emergency accommodation.”
“It’s utterly disappointing that the Liberal National Government have done nothing to help the 50 or so individuals at the Moruya Heads Campground that have been without secure housing for years.”
“NSW Labor has already committed to a Build to Rent pilot on the South Coast, however, our community has been calling out for immediate short-term solutions. This may only be a drop in the bucket of what is needed but it’s a positive step in the right direction”
“This true grassroots, community-funded project by this CWA chapter is helping provide secure housing for one of our community's most vulnerable demographics.”
“The CWA has fundraised over half a million dollars for this project already so I’ll be thrilled if I can help get it over the line”
Quotes attributable to Rose Jackson MLC, NSW Shadow Minister for Housing and Homelessness:
“Michael Holland has been a tireless advocate for the housing crisis in his community and it's a pleasure to support him to make some specific announcements to start to address this extremely serious situation.”
“The combination of natural disasters, COVID, and 12 years of Liberal and National neglect of the housing needs of regional communities have all contributed to a severe housing crisis on the Far South Coast. There are simply not enough affordable rentals or social housing options to meet the needs of the community.”
“Today’s announcements will not solve this problem alone, but in combination with the range of other commitments Labor has made on housing and our ongoing dedication to delivering affordable housing for regional NSW, we can start to offer more people a stable and secure place to call home.”
Quotes attributable to Malindey Sorrell, CEO of the Family Place:
“The Family Place is thrilled as these tiny homes will fill a major gap in the Eurobodalla and provide people and families a safe place to call home”
“A wonderful opportunity to provide local people a safe place to call home, while waiting on other longer-term housing options”.
“It has also given our team who work so hard in such difficult circumstances, a sense of hope for the future. Our team are often outreaching to people in vehicles, under bridges and at campsites in very distressing and complex situations. It really can wear the team down I have been concerned for some time that if things don't start shifting in government that we will start losing our incredible and skilled workforce.”
