I recognise the extraordinary contribution of Shirley, whose decades of volunteer service and commitment to community wellbeing continue to make a profound difference across the Sapphire Coast. Since completing cardiac rehabilitation herself, Shirley has devoted more than 12 years to leading the Heart Foundation Walking group in Merimbula with compassion, energy and unwavering encouragement. Since 2013, she has completed more than 500 walks, inspiring people of all ages and abilities to improve their health and confidence through physical activity and social connection. Shirley's inclusive approach ensures every participant feels welcome and supported. Through her leadership, many walkers have achieved significant personal milestones, including improved mobility, recovery from cardiac illness and substantial weight loss. Her support has been especially valuable for cardiac rehabilitation patients rebuilding strength and confidence after illness. Born in Pambula and raised in Kiah and Eden, Shirley has spent a lifetime serving her community. A nurse by profession, wife, mother of two and grandmother of five, she has volunteered continuously for more than 60 years across numerous organisations and community services. Shirley was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in 2022. She remains a shining example of generosity, resilience and community spirit.
