Congratulations to Dr Nathan Oates who has been awarded Medical Officer of the Year in the
SNSWLHD Excellence Awards
Dr Nathan Oates is a VMO Anaesthetist and Director of Prevocational Education and Training at
South East Regional Hospital in Bega who has made a strong impact on patient care, workforce
development, and the local community.
Patients and colleagues value his calm approach, clear communication, and compassionate
care, especially in high-pressure situations. He is a respected member of the Bega Valley
community and is known not just as a doctor, but as someone who is genuinely connected and
committed to improving health outcomes locally.
Dr Oates has also built a high-quality training environment that attracts and supports junior
doctors in a regional setting. He developed and leads a well-regarded JMO and SRMO program,
provides hands-on teaching and mentorship, and creates opportunities such as simulation
training and GP placements.
His work has improved the experience, retention, and career pathways of junior doctors, with
many choosing to stay and practise in the region. Through his leadership, collaboration, and
advocacy, he has helped position SERH as a sought-after place to train and work, delivering
lasting benefits for Southern.
